This is probably a question much out of us ask but rarely get a satisfactory answer. The answer becomes critical especially for those who feel that their teeth and gums are decaying every day and are desperately in need of guidance. Well! God has answered your prayers.
Where God Almighty has blessed humans with many vital organs in the body, one of the most vital organ is the mouth. The human mouth is such a beautifully designed part within which many other parts can work simultaneously and wonderfully well, helping one stay alive and healthy. It has five basic parts, the Jaws, the teeth and gums, the muscles, the salivary glands and the tongue.

In this article, we shall mainly focus on the teeth and gums, problems associated with them and finally discuss ways and means to keep them healthy so that the whole body remains healthy.

Let us first determine what teeth and gums are and what are the causes of the decay of teeth? Small whitish colored structures found in the mouth, used for breaking down food are the teeth. Gums protect the root of the tooth and hold them firmly in place. Healthy gums are pale pink in color, when they are not; they get red and may even bleed. In such a case, they shrink away from the teeth causing them to fall out. The three common diseases associated with teeth and gums are plaque, cavity and gum disease.

Plaque is a small yellowish colored, thin bio film naturally built up on the teeth. If not removed, it can slowly and gradually turn into acid and start affecting the outermost layer, called Enamel. Plaques can occur due to improper brushing, not flossing the teeth, not getting teeth checked by a dentist, not using crunchy vegetables and fruits that naturally scrub off the plaque and by eating sugar products in substantially large quantities.

Dental plaque if allowed to stay on the teeth for a longer duration can lead to the formation of small holes commonly known as cavities. Although these holes can be filled later with fillings, but it is always better avoiding tooth decay by regular brushing and flossing rather than leaving it unattended.
Gum disease is a condition in which tissues surrounding the tooth get affected due to bacterial infection and may foster tooth loss. The gum disease / infection gets prominent with the increase in exposure of the tooth. It may or may not develop pus, swelling or bleeding, therefore, if left undetected; it may result in loss of tooth. It is for this reason that doctors recommend periodic dental checkup even if there is no apparent gum disease.

Now comes the million dollar question. How can the teeth and gums be averted from disease? There are easy, routine procedures that if followed regularly and in true letter and spirit can prevent us from developing teeth decay and gum disease.
